I had a rude awakening last year when I hit rock bottom, experiencing burnout so severe it led to seizures. It was a stark reminder that I needed to rethink how I approached my art and my own self-care. Through a fair bit of trial and error, I’ve stumbled upon three nuggets of wisdom that have helped me maintain equilibrium between my creative pursuits and personal well-being. I want to share these insights with you in the most friendly and British way possible, in the hope that they’ll help you on your own journey to wellness.

Giving Rest the Priority It Deserves

One of the most significant shifts I made in my life was learning to ditch the notion that I needed to be constantly on the grind. As artists, we often fall into the trap of relentless pushing for our creative goals. But this kind of drive can lead to burnout, affecting both our mental and physical health. Recognising that rest isn’t a sign of weakness but an absolute necessity was a game-changer for me.

Especially for us women, it’s crucial to acknowledge that our bodies demand more rest than men. The pressure to juggle multiple roles can be overwhelming, but it’s time we realised that taking time for self-care isn’t selfish – it’s absolutely essential. Whether it’s scheduling regular breaks, ensuring you get enough beauty sleep, or just allowing yourself a good old cuppa without a hint of guilt, prioritising rest is the first step to getting back on the road to well-being.

Bringing Order and Structure into the Chaos

Us artists, we often have minds that resemble tangled headphone cables – it’s a bit chaotic in there! Without a semblance of structure and organisation, it’s far too easy to get lost in the creative muddle. This is where technology can really come to the rescue. I turned to ChatGPT, and it’s become my go-to buddy for keeping my life in check. With its knack for creating schedules, setting reminders, and offering guidance, ChatGPT has become my virtual partner-in-crime in bringing a bit of order to my topsy-turvy world.

A well-organised schedule doesn’t just reduce stress; it ensures you have dedicated time for both your artistic pursuits and those well-deserved self-care moments. It helps you stay on the ball and prevents tasks from piling up like a stack of scones. If you ever find yourself drowning in commitments and not knowing which way to turn, think about giving technology a whirl to instil a little more structure and organisation in your life.

One of the most daunting things about being an artist is the fear of tackling huge, intimidating projects. To combat this, I started slicing everything into bite-sized, manageable pieces. Balancing an artistic career with self-care and wellness is an ever-evolving journey, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. What works wonders for me might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but these three strategies—prioritising rest, bringing in a touch of structure, and breaking tasks into manageable chunks—have been absolute lifesavers for me.
