Life can be tough, and it’s normal to feel down at times. When we’re feeling low, it can be difficult to find the motivation to do anything, let alone practice mindfulness.

This week I had a bad mental health episode where the only thing I managed to do over two days was run a bath and watching light comedies to forget the stress. However, mindfulness can be a powerful tool to help us manage our emotions and improve our well-being. I’m proud of myself for Googling ways to feel better during this period, the main help was telling myself “I’m proud of you for keeping going, take it easy, you will feel better soon.” Here are five small ways to add mindfulness to your day when you’re feeling down.


Take a Mindful Walk


Connect with Others

Social support is crucial for our well-being. Call a friend, family member, or helpline and have a conversation. Listen to them and share what’s going on with you. Practice active listening and try to be present in the moment. Connecting with others can help us feel less alone and improve our mood.

When it’s not your day but you need to catch a breath, getting outside and taking a walk can be incredibly beneficial. It’s a chance to get some fresh air, exercise, and clear your mind. To add mindfulness to your walk, try to focus on your surroundings. Pay attention to the sights, sounds, and smells around you. Notice the way your feet feel as they touch the ground. Take deep breaths and try to relax your body.

Practice Gratitude

It can be easy to focus on the negative things in our lives, especially when going through a bad mental health patch it can be hard to find perspective. However, practicing gratitude can be a great way to shift our focus and improve our mood. Take a few minutes each day to write down three things you’re thankful for. They can be big or small, and they don’t have to be related to your current situation.


Take a Break from Technology

Technology can be a great tool, but it can also be a source of stress and anxiety. Especially if you’re anything like me and get sucked into a TikTok vortex for hours. When we’re feeling down, it’s important to take a break from technology and disconnect for a while. Turn off your phone, computer, and TV and spend some time doing something you enjoy. Read a book, take a bath, or dance around your room. By disconnecting from technology, we give ourselves a chance to recharge and be more present in the moment.

Practice Self-Compassion

When we’re feeling down, it’s easy to be hard on ourselves. However, practicing self-compassion can be a powerful way to improve our mood and well-being. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a good friend. Remember that it’s okay to feel down and that you’re doing the best you can.
